With the invention of the door came a new and beloved part of humanity - privacy. Though interaction is an essential part of every civilization, so too is the need for time alone, an area to call one's own. The door was the perfect way to ensure that was possible. However, a door cannot stand on its own. It requires support. That comes in the form of a door jamb. Often overlooked, ignored, or underappreciated, the door jamb plays a very important role in every home.

Installing a door can be a difficult and daunting task, for most of the homeowners or even novice contractors. Installing the door correctly, can make a big difference on how long the door will take before it actually starts rubbing against the kikgard metal doorjambs.

Professional door hanging advice can only be given out by people who have dealt with and solve these problems in the past and now know how to prevent them in the future.

The extension jamb is a piece of wood that can be nailed on one side of the door jam, to make it a little longer, if necessary. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: you go down to your local home improvement center and buy a pre-hung door and the doorjamb width it is 4 1/2 inches wide.

This doorjamb is made for a 3 1/2 inch wide rough framed wall, with one sheet of half inch drywall on each side, giving us a 4 1/2 inch wide wall, which the new doorjamb will be covering.

Now what if, you're going to be using a 2 x 6 wall or a 2 x 4 wall with 5/8 inch drywall on each side or a 2 x 4 wall with plywood on it and then half inch drywall on each side. Your standard doorjamb will now need to be wider and this is the purpose of an extension jamb for crime prevention.

Install the door even to one side of the wall and then you will install the extension jamb on the other side of your new doorjamb.

Door Jambs Matter s a Lot in Your House

When people look to put a new door into their home, oftentimes they don't think much beyond the actual door itself. Because most people are already living comfortably in their homes, they are interested in options that will fit their current door frames. You have many more options to choose from.

Otherwise, you will have to make sure to work with what you currently have installed in your home. However, if you really want a specific door with doorjamb security device and it doesn't quite match with your current frame, you may be able to remove the frame and install the entire door to get exactly what you want.

Jambs are an important part of a door. In fact, these are what the door is hung on with its hinges. It can be easy to confuse the different parts of a door frame and whether or not they need to be included when you purchase a door. Door jambs bear the weight of the door; they are the vertical parts of the frame surrounding the door and will fit snugly against the wood when closed. Most door jambs will also include some kind of latch or deadbolt recess so you can securely lock the door when necessary.

Your door jambs need to work perfectly with your door if you want a secure seal and a good lock. It doesn't matter if you intend to buy an interior door or if you need a door to separate out the interior and the exterior of the house. Because the door jambs are where the door hangs and locks into, they need to be strong. They are important when it comes to the operational durability as well as the overall security of the crime prevention door.

Many manufacturers will have their doors fashioned in a pre-hung way. This means that they will include the door jambs. There are several different door jambs that you can choose from as well. Each from kerfed flat jambs to rabbeted jambs to flat jambs will have something different to offer you in terms of design and functionality.

Wooden Doorjambs

When you lock your door at night you may be surprised to know what you are sending that case harden solid steel bolt throw into.

Few realize the many different ways a doorjamb is constructed the photo below is made up of multiple square pieces of wood glued together to form the jamb. Other methods are finger jointing where several short sections of wood are glued together and others are solid wood. Once the door is painted you can not tell which jamb you have.   If all you want is for a door to open and close that all work.  But don't expect the jamb to equal the one inch solid steel deadbolt throw which enters just 1/2 inch away from the inside of your home. Each hole drilled for the locks, strike plates and hinges weakens the jamb even more. For security each must be reinforced. www.kikgard.com .

Why doorjambs are breaking

This real life photo shows strike plates with 3-1/2 screws. Note how that the jamb is splitting each screw hole in half and will split the bolt and latch holes in half as well. Drill more holes in the face of the jamb is not a solution. What many people do not realize is that most doorjambs are made up of many pieces of wood glue or finger jointed together usually from soft pine wood. While this may serve the purpose of opening and closing a door it does not provide any security.  Www. kikgard.com Everyone.

The Hidden Truth about 3 inch screws.

The most common suggestion to reinforce a door frame is to use three inch screws that can reach into the jack stud. When you insert a three screw it does feel like it adds more strength to the jamb. But this is only because there has not been enough time for the chemical reactions with the metal screws and wooden stud. Over time the grip of the screw into the wood will weaken. What is never show or seen is actually where the screws are going into the stud. When you add thickness of the sheet rock the screws will only catch the edge of the soft pine wall stud and like the jamb this wood will easily split and break. This photo is a good example of what is really taking place with the screws and the stud. As the door opens and closes the connection with the stuc and screws will loosen. Better that nothing yes but it is not a serious answer to the problem. That's why the Kikgard Shield does not rely on screws to resist force impact.
