The Hidden Truth about 3 inch screws.

The most common suggestion to reinforce a door frame is to use three inch screws that can reach into the jack stud. When you insert a three screw it does feel like it adds more strength to the jamb. But this is only because there has not been enough time for the chemical reactions with the metal screws and wooden stud. Over time the grip of the screw into the wood will weaken. What is never show or seen is actually where the screws are going into the stud. When you add thickness of the sheet rock the screws will only catch the edge of the soft pine wall stud and like the jamb this wood will easily split and break. This photo is a good example of what is really taking place with the screws and the stud. As the door opens and closes the connection with the stuc and screws will loosen. Better that nothing yes but it is not a serious answer to the problem. That's why the Kikgard Shield does not rely on screws to resist force impact.
